‘Here in Maasai land we only forgive twice and the third time we react. But we thank God now because what Creators of Peace taught us has changed this negative ideology.’ This was a comment by one of the 14 women who participated in the Creators of Peace (CoP) follow up meeting that took place on 11 July, 2015 at Ololulunga center, Narok County.
These women shared how their county have experienced a lot of hardships in the recent past including a dry period which affected their livelihoods. But the CoP training have helped them to continue doing what is right.
Peace Circles helped Namarat to handle difficult situations in her family, neighbours and her workers. She shared how she has learnt to listen to people and make wise decisions that have made her relationship with others better and stronger.
Selina who had so much hatred for her neighbour, narrated how she was able to forgive and develop inner peace, she says it was not easy but now she enjoys the freedom of liberating her heart from unnecessary anger and pain.
‘I never cared about what was happening to my neighbours. After the CoP, I changed and now do whatever I can do to help. I learnt that when my neighbours peace is disrupted, the entire community shakes.’ Said Mary.
One of the women who had previously attended the CoP training could not make it to the follow-up because her elder sister was raped and murdered two days to the meeting. It was very unfortunate. ‘Tension is already building up in my neighborhood due to blame game involving the community of the deceased and that of the suspected killers. As creators of peace we will do what we can to help the situation and also hope that the law will take its course.’ Shared Irene.
It was time for the women to recommit themselves by pledging to be peace ambassadors in Narok. Candle lighting was the best way to symbolize this occasion amid songs and dance.
The Creators of Peace Kenya wishes to thank Irene Prestwich Trust Fund (IPT) and Friends of Africa Fund (FoA) who financially supported this meeting.
