Peace Circles in Kabartonjo, Baringo North, Kenya.

"If it were not for Creators of Peace training, I would have gone to hell if I had died today because of an unforgiving heart and getting annoyed easily.” This was a comment by Lorna, one of the 24 women who took part in a Peace Circle that took place in Kabartonjo, Baringo North between 17-19 November last year.  Bishop John Chebet of Full Gospel Churches of Kenya gave the opening blessing and encouraged the empowerment of women, both socially and economically.

One unique thing with this group of women was that you could not differentiate the oldest from the youngest since they were so vibrant and eager to learn. Some of the concerns raised by these women, included:  alcoholism, polygamy, unequal distribution of resources, tribalism, corruption and high levels of illiteracy.

"Peace can develop Kenya, especially if women are given a chance," said Counsellor Flora Cheboi. Elizabeth a participant shared, "Every woman is gifted and they are all the same whether educated, rich, poor or any race, they all go through the same challenges as women.”

Reflection was a new concept for most of them but they appreciated the new tool for change in their lives. "Reflection gives the heart time to refresh. I have everything that life gives but it has not given me peace of mind," said Helen. “My heart was full of questions and no one came to rescue me but as for today I am at peace, thanks to Creators of Peace programme,” said another participant. “Reflection has broadened my mind and heart. I have a reason to smile again," said Mrs. Rotich.  For Nancy, she shared that “since the year 1997 after the general election I was annoyed by one of my neighbours but I have decided to forgive my neighbour and I will ensure we share dinner tonight."

The closing ceremony was graced by  a Member of County Assembly who promised to support the women to reach out to the whole society. With him was the Ward Administrator and the area Chief who is regarded a role model to the community of Kabartonjo.

The CoP team in Kenya appreciates the financial support from the CoP Sydney team that enabled this training in Baringo to take place.
