Kenya I Care Report
On 8th October, 2015, the 'Kenya I Care' team held a two-hour session with the theme of ‘Effective Living and Leadership’ with 25 Media students from Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) and 20 students from Ongata Senior School at the invitation of Multimedia University Journalism Club.
This was the first session of its kind where we had a combination of University and High School students who are future media professionals. The session focused on being a good media professional who is also a good human being and the moral + ethical challenges a media practitioner faces.
We chose to meet this group because media is primarily about masses, and masses are primarily underprivileged. For one to be a good media professional, one needs to understand issues bothering the masses in order to be an effective communicator. In today’s world, crises and war are threatening human security and survival of cities in different parts of the world.
It’s a crisis of the human spirit where political ambitions have bred wars and huge numbers of people are migrating, looking for better and safer grounds. Some do not make it. We also focused on personal values and how to find them in silence.
The bottom-line was that each person has a role and responsibility in shaping the world. Through practice of journalism, writing and filming, the roles are clearly defined and one can choose to influence the masses positively. It’s this responsibility that also defines one as effective or superfluous.
‘We have appreciated your coming and we want to have this conversation again,’ Ian Ismael, President of Journalism Club expressed.
We look forward to the second session where we will explore the link between personal and global change and how relationships affect society and community values.
