Shedding the Burdens of Anger and Bitterness. Creators of Peace Vihiga County, Kegoye Village, Kenya
In the serene and picturesque Kegoye village in Vihiga County, a group of 24 women and 5 men gathered early on a crisp Monday morning. Their main purpose was to delve into the concept of peace, making this peace circle truly unique due to the diversity of its participants. Among them were individuals representing different age groups, genders, marital statuses, religious affiliations, and village roles. Some attendees arrived with a semblance of knowledge about what the day might entail, while others seemed uncertain or even apprehensive
The session commenced with words of encouragement and a prayer from Pastor Thomas who was one of the participant.
From the very outset, the atmosphere was alive with interaction as everyone eagerly engaged in the activities. The initial discussions centered on defining peace, with the majority agreeing that it encompassed qualities like love, forgiveness, selflessness, patience, and purity of heart
The learning sessions were dynamic and inclusive, featuring group discussions, story sharing, and reflections that left a deep impact. The impact was evident as participants shared their experiences and takeaways. The day ended with participants expressing their newfound understanding of peace, emphasizing values such as love, forgiveness, respect, and patience.
As the days progressed, a noticeable transformation was observed among the participants. The sense of joy, liveliness, and camaraderie flourished, replacing earlier trepidation and hesitance. The morning reflections echoed stories of personal change, as participants shared touching anecdotes about newfound peace and an alleviation of their worries.
The apex of the peace circle was an exploration of power of forgiveness. Through various artistic and expressive mediums, participants openly conveyed their apologies, released pent-up resentments, and sought closure. Witnessing this cathartic process was deeply moving, as both the young and old shed burdens of anger and bitterness. Many participants found this exercise liberating, releasing them from lots of resentments.
We had a few of them share their take back home and these were the reactions:
“From today henceforth, ill embrace inner peace and practice meditation” said Sakina Wafula “I have learnt that when I don’t listen to others it hurts very much,” said Mary Anyango
In the final reflections and feedback, participants lauded the impact of the peace circle, expressing gratitude for the restoration of hope, joy, and love that it brought. They fervently declared their commitment to make peace a priority in their lives, families, and communities, and voiced a collective desire for more such peace circles in Vihiga County. Their words resonated with a remarkable sense of transformation, hope, and unity
